You’ve heard people talk about swapping out their throw blankets and pillows for fresh options as a new season approaches. But while everyone else is fussing over their sofa, you’ll find designer Shea McGee toying with her table lamps. For her fall Target collection, she has introduced a large assortment of mix-and-match light fixtures. Specifically there are six base and six shade styles, and they’re all completely interchangeable. “From a simple tapered shape to a playful gingham print and scallops, it’s easy to find the perfect look for any room,” the designer shared on Studio McGee’s site

Really, you can’t go wrong with any arrangement. The idea is to purchase your favorites and, when you tire of their initial placement, move them around. It seems like a small thing, but a quick shade substitute can totally change the way you see a room. Here are a few of the pairings we love the most.

For a Cottagecore Moment

The brown gingham pleated shade will pick up the muddy olive green tones in this ceramic base nicely.

For Year-Round Beach Vibes

Turned wood chairs and wicker tables are beach house staples. Combine them in a single lamp form and you can get that feel-good energy for way less.

For a Nook in Need of Curves

If a shelf or console table is looking stiff and you can’t quite figure out why, it might be because there’s not enough shape or texture happening. Pairing this scalloped shade with a faux wood ball base will solve for boring corners.

For Classing Up a Bar or Nightstand

When a streamlined taper shade and an ultra-thin brass base meet, they look like they belong on the table of a fancy restaurant.

You won’t often hear Nate Berkus speaking about big-box retailers. Instead you’ll find his most common descriptors are things like “1950s Italian,” “1880s Louis XV style,” and “mid-century French.” When he talks about his personal design heroes, he rattles off such names as Angelo Mangiarotti, Alberto Giacometti, Axel Einar Hjorth, and Gae Aulenti. That’s because when Berkus wants to make a home feel truly special, he shops vintage.

Naturally, 1stDibs asked the interior designer to curate a list of some of his favorite pieces on the online marketplace. In honor of Pride month, Berkus honed in on items listed by LGBTQ+ sellers. Meanwhile, the company will be making a donation to nonprofit advocacy group Housing Works, which provides funding and lifesaving services to those affected by HIV/AIDS and homelessness.

Throughout the month of June, Berkus will be spotlighting 30 of his top finds. Here’s a look at some of his selects so far and why he picked them out from the crowd.

Folding Screen 100 Designed by Alvar Aalto

This “terrific architectural staple,” as Berkus calls it, recently made its way into one of his projects in Massachusetts. But if this divider gets snapped up soon, never fear: They’re all over 1stDibs. Depending on the condition and what year it was produced, you can get one for closer to $6,000.

Giovanni Offredi for Saporiti Dining Chairs

There’s something sporty about the sledlike base of these sleek chairs, but the cream-colored upholstery isn’t for the faint of heart (or those with little ones present at the dinner table).

Cast Resin Plaster Dado Table Lamp

white lamp
Cast Resin Plaster Texture Dado Table Lamp, Kacper Dolatowski, 1stDibs ($3,250)

One ingredient to a great entryway, according to Berkus, is a good lamp—even better if said fixture doubles as a stylish sculpture, like this geometric resin one.

Duanye Hatchett Abstract Painting

black and white painting
Huge Mid Century Modern Texas Artist Abstract Expressionist Action Painting (1992) by Duanye Hatchett, 1stDibs ($7,899 was $9,750)
Shop

Berkus’s designer husband, Jeremiah Brent, previously revealed to us that when the couple searches online for art, they use terms like contemporary, mixed medium, transitional, and geometric. This piece by Duanye Hatchett meets their basic requirements.

Neoclassical Wrought-Iron and Bronze Bench

white bench
Neoclassical Wrought-Iron and Bronze Bench, France 1950s, 1stDibs ($9,500)

We know exactly what it was about this bench that caught Berkus’s attention: The iron and bronze base is designed in the style of Alberto Giacometti.

Large 19th-Century English Pine Cupboard

Large 19th-Century English Pine Housekeeper’s Cupboard, 1stDibs ($11,875)

We can see Berkus situating this freestanding cabinet against a wall clad in antique mirrors, much like the ones in his NYC dining room.

Mid-Century Modern Lacquer Waterfall Nesting Tables

Mid-Century Modern Lacquer Waterfall Nesting Tables – Jean-Michel Frank Style, 1stDibs ($4 was $5,880)

Jean-Michel Frank has always been one of Berkus’s favorite designers. “The simplicity of these tables in his style would work in any room,” says the designer.

Hermès Victoria 43 Travel Bag

Black and tan is one of his go-to color combos because it’s both classic “and yet not supercommon. The Victoria has always been a great value in comparison to other Hermès styles. And you can fit a lot in it!” shares Berkus.

Gold Leaf Mirror Classical Shape

There are already seven active offers on this gold leaf-plated bentwood and plaster mirror, and we only have the squiggly decor trend to blame.

Burgundy Glazed Chinese Pottery Jardiniere With Ram’s Horns

Burgundy Glazed Chinese Pottery Jardiniere With Ram’s Horns, 1stDibs ($1,590)

Leave it empty or fill it with a fern—either way, this pot is a star. Plus Berkus is a sucker for this color and a ram motif.

Brutalist Solid Elm Bench, France 1960s

“This rough-hewn French Brutalist–style bench works easily in so many locations: the Alps, at the beach, or in Ohio,” Berkus suggests.

Deborah Lea Dresser by Kate Duncan

Despite its higher price tag, this Brutalist-inspired dresser is already sitting in two customers’ carts, probably because it’s a lifetime investment. The piece is crafted from solid hardwood, leather, and brass.

Home Front is a twice-weekly deep dive into the rising—and returning—trends, decor, and teeniest of design details fresh on our radar. Last week, Lindsey, Domino’s digital director, got ready to cut the (lamp) cord.

Subscribe now to get the next Home Front newsletter, and read the full edition here.

In May, we put out a Home Front poll asking what you wanted us to cover next. Not to brag, but my personal contribution to the list—mini portable lamps—eked out the win with 28 percent of the vote. Which means this newsletter is dedicated to all the cordless cuties I’ve encountered since the style popped up on my radar back in 2019-ish. Let’s do this.

I say 2019 because that’s when Hay came out with its iconic bell-shaped PC lamp, one of the first portables I remember taking note of. That same year, &Tradition’s now-ubiquitous Setago light hit virtual shelves. Fast-forward to 2024, and little rechargeable lamps are only getting more distinctive. We’ve already been graced with a fluorescent orange take, a playful painted steel creation, and a mini mountainous delight made of mycelium. A take-anywhere light source feels particularly useful for my new it’s-almost-summer ritual with my husband: sunset dinners on the patio after we put the baby to bed.

On Board

Photography by Cody James; Styling by Merisa Libbey

It’s impossible to pick a favorite, so here are nine more I’m eyeing:

  1. Middle-of-the-night baby wake-ups have got nothing on this washi paper lantern, which has a handle for easy toting from rocking chair to changing table.
  2. I love how Schoolhouse put just as much attention into the design of the bulb as the rest of this space age–y light. (Psst: There’s a round option if the diamond isn’t for you.)
  3. Forgoing a cord typically means missing out on dimmability, a nonnegotiable for good vibes. Luckily, Lulu and Georgia is two steps ahead and smartly incorporated a brass knob.
  4. Our Friday night pizza tradition would be positively elegant in the company of this slender table topper—the opaque shade directs light downward for a restaurant feel at home.
  5. Honestly, the shape of this creamy matte one is so striking, it looks just as good off—let it be sculpture. But if you do turn it on, the charge should last 12 hours.
  6. Rather than mar the plywood-clad ceilings in her living room with hardwired lighting, creative director Bethany Brill relies on the soft glow of a coffee-table lamp.
  7. The finial on this shiny, candylike light is for more than just looks—it’s how you turn it on and off or adjust the brightness, all with a tap or press of a finger.
  8. Okay, this U.K.-made lamp is totally out of budget, but I’m a sucker for the traditional bone china shade paired with playful powder-coated metal.
  9. For whatever reason, most cordless lamps look nothing like their wired counterparts. Audo’s rechargeable version of its standard Torso style, however, is a third the size but has the same linen shade and ceramic base.

Lace, Crochet, Eyelet—Fashion’s High-Texture Trend Is Hitting Home https://www.domino.com/style-shopping/lace-trend-home-decor/ Fri, 14 Jun 2024 16:00:00 +0000 https://www.domino.com/?p=338227

From Loeffler Randall to Sea New York, all of our favorite fashion brands have something in common this season: They’re full of crocheted, eyelet, and lace fabrics. Gone are the breezy linen caftans of coastal grandma and the little red dresses of tomato girl summer. These ’70s-inspired see-through knits are here for the season.

But the best thing about these woven patterns is that they can go so many different ways, not just boho. For instance, eyelet can veer traditional; crochet can go granny (in a good way); and lace, depending on how it appears, can fit almost any personal style.

And while we love a vintage-inspired look hanging in our closet, we love it even more in the home decor space. Sweet textured detailing on napkins, pillowcases, and throw blankets evokes a warm and fuzzy, nostalgic feel—like you’re hanging out at your effortlessly chic nonna’s house. Get the look with some of our favorites, below.

It looks way more expensive than it actually is.

Sometimes it can seem like there’s no middle ground when it comes to cabinet hardware. The cool-kid picks are certainly design forward, but they’re also quite costly. The most affordable are just that and nothing more: They often skew cheap, and that’s not only in price. So we’re always scanning home tours, renos, and retailers to seek out the best of the bunch. That means the products that balance quality, material, budget, and style.

Recently we’ve noticed one name pop up again and again, and not because it’s new. Hickory Hardware, a U.S.-based company that has been around since 1893, still designs and makes all of its products in-house in Michigan. To start, we’ve seen them in a Minneapolis kitchen makeover as well as stories about the best rental upgrades. (Pro tip: Plug in Hickory Hardware knobs or pulls into the Amazon search bar to turn up more styles than show up on the company’s home page.) Here are the eight we’re feeling right now, including a contemporary take on oak and a favorite of Lone Fox.

Hickory Hardware Piper Cabinet Knobs

hickorypiperpull
Hickory Hardware Piper Cabinet Knobs, Set of 10, Amazon ($56)
Shop

These Domino reader–favorite knobs have a lot going for them: The design is versatile and timeless, it’s available in three different finishes, and all the hardware needed comes in your package. It’s also pretty rare to find anything on Amazon with a full 5 stars; the Piper is reviewed as “beautiful and sturdy knobs” and “heavyweight.”

Hickory Hardware Williamsburg Cabinet Pulls

hickorywilliamsburg
Hickory Hardware Williamsburg Cabinet Pull, Set of 1, Amazon ($6)
Shop

These pulls scratch that traditional itch without being too ornate. They’d look great paired with a bridge faucet and marble countertops—and the sizing and finish variations offer ample options to fit your space. You can order one or 10, and each is just $6.

Hickory Hardware Refined Rustic Cabinet Pulls

hickoryrustic
Hickory Hardware Refined Rustic Cabinet Pull, Set of 1, Amazon ($5)

We love the look of this collection from Hickory, perfect for an Arts and Crafts structure or cozy cottage—and it doesn’t hurt that these pulls have more than 2,000 positive reviews. The iron style makes it look like you sourced these from a vintage bin, and when they’re designer approved as a rental upgrade, what are you waiting for?

Hickory Hardware Natural Woodcraft Cabinet Pulls

hickorywoodpull
Hickory Hardware Natural Woodcraft Cabinet Pull, Set of 1, Amazon ($4)
Shop

We don’t often see genuine wood hardware in today’s kitchens, but these natural oak handles lend a Scandi-modern feel in their simplicity. “They feel really good in your hand,” Victoria Sass, founder of Prospect Refuge Studio, told Domino. You can finish or stain them, and there are even matching knobs available. If you’re looking for more options, there’s another intriguing shape in the same wood, too.

Hickory Hardware American Diner Cabinet Knobs

hickoryamericandinerknob
Hickory Hardware American Diner Cabinet Knobs, Set of 1, Amazon ($39)
Shop

If you’re seeking a retro vibe, these knobs are it. Harking back to 1950s and 1960s classics, the three-ridged edge is lighthearted without being too nostalgic. They’d look great in an all–stainless steel kitchen, too.

Hickory Hardware Midway Cabinet Knobs

hickorymidway
Hickory Hardware Midway Cabinet Knob, Set of 1, Amazon ($8)
Shop

If a touch of glam is what you’re after, the Midway group has it in bounds. Transparent acrylic tops a metal post, and reviewers love the knobs for how quickly they can upgrade a dresser or cabinets.

Hickory Hardware Pipeline Collection Knobs

hickorypipeline
Hickory Hardware Pipeline Collection Knob, Set of 1, Amazon ($5 was $8)
Shop

We like that this one is industrial in design without reading “I was a plumber in a previous life.” The Pipeline knobs would fit in well in a loft with exposed brick, sure, but they’ll also hold their own in a home office or bathroom with a darker palette.

Hickory Hardware American Diner Cabinet Pulls

hickoryamericandiner
Hickory Hardware American Diner Cabinet Pull, Set of 1, Amazon ($6 was $9)
Shop

The pulls from the American Diner collection call to mind those that Real Housewives of New York star Brynn Whitfield used in her New York City apartment. The cup shape would look great in a bungalow, and this one gets high marks from reviewers for being “very elegant” and “great quality.”

IKEA is well-known for its furniture, excellent tableware, and meatballs—but a hidden gem among them all has always been its textiles. For more than 80 years, the Swedish superstore has sold fabrics in all kinds of vibrant patterns, and starting in July, it’s adding 20 new ones in a collection called Tyg.

Courtesy of Inter IKEA Systems B.V. 2024

The 100% cotton, precut rectangles come at a tempting price ($10 to $15 for 59-by-118 inches), but the eternal question remains: What do you even do with a bolt of fabric? Thankfully, IKEA has thought of that. The brand has offered up several brilliant ideas for using the textiles around the house, no matter your sewing level. In fact, some don’t require a needle and thread at all. Here are our three no-sew favorites.

Instant Art

Courtesy of Inter IKEA Systems B.V. 2024

All you need is a stapler and a blank (or not) canvas to create one-of-a-kind wall art. Just cut the fabric to cover a piece of foam board, stretching the cotton tight along one side and stapling the edges to the back. Repeat until all four sides are secure.

Better Boxes

Courtesy of Inter IKEA Systems B.V. 2024

Storage never looked so chic. Armed with your fabric, scissors, and glue, you can transform shoeboxes (or even books!) into beautifully covered objets. Honestly, it’s not that different from wrapping a present.

Orderly Walls

Courtesy of Inter IKEA Systems B.V. 2024

Apply fabric glue to one end of a fabric rectangle and roll it up around a wood rod. Use the glue to add pockets in a contrasting textile, then tie two cuttings to the ends of the rod to hang your organizer on the wall with a big bow.

It’s a homeowner rite of passage: Within the first few weeks of moving in, after having spent most of your life savings on this house, something will go wrong. The water heater will go kaput, the basement will flood, or you’ll hear little critter feet scurrying in the attic. Cue the flying cash emoji. It’s not a great feeling—especially if you’re a first-time homeowner, as home services marketplace Angi’s latest report reveals.

In its survey of 1,000 recent homeowners, 19 percent say that unexpected costs were the most surprising thing about owning a home, and 43 percent of the youngest respondents (18-to-24-year-olds) were uncomfortable with how much they had to shell out on home maintenance.

But while Angi found that first-timers are more likely to invest in a home project early on, 30 percent have regrets—specifically about the kitchen. Forty percent of the remorseful wish they’d remodeled the space right off the bat. Other top projects they would’ve gotten out of the way: painting, new flooring, and a bathroom renovation. If you’re in the same boat, we’re here to remind you that there’s plenty you can change about your current kitchen while you save up for a total transformation. Here are three in-between updates to consider:

Forgo Cabinet Doors Entirely

Are your cupboard fronts a style that no amount of paint can improve? In Leanne Ford’s first iteration of her guesthouse, she kept things charmingly bare bones, hanging gingham curtains in place of cabinet doors.

Board Up Your Backsplash

One day, creator Emily Jane Lathan’s London kitchen will become a bedroom. Until then, a mini makeover is tiding her over. Covering up the uneven plaster walls with tongue-and-groove MDF sheets instead of a typical tile backsplash helped Lathan keep the budget under $4,000.

Give the Hardest-Working Hardware Some Love

Fresh knobs and pulls are a game changer, but don’t overlook the inner workings of your cupboards either. Wildflower Home blogger Marynn Udvarhelyi swapped the old exposed hinges in her kitchen with hidden ones that also happen to be soft-close.

We love this classic checked rug because it bridges so many different interior styles: Renaissance glamour (seriously—ballrooms were often anchored in the print), ’90s vibes (thanks, Vans), and so much more.

The slight ombré of this hand-loomed textile is downright sophisticated (and more than $1,000 off). It’s a design you won’t notice as soon as you walk into a room or outdoor space, but it plays an even more important part: setting a solid base for vibrant art and sculptural furniture.

This design was one in a collection inspired by the women of the Bauhaus movement—the background and finished product make it an actual piece of art. (Seriously, we’d hang this on a wall.)

Boswell Hand-Tufted Wool Rug

This is a rug with just enough intrigue—curved edges, mossy colorway, contrasting edge—that it will start a conversation. The best part is that it has one of our favorite textile details of the moment: clever borders.

Sabriel Handwoven Indoor-Outdoor Rug

We love the bold, single stripe, but the real winner here is the fringe. This detail alone brings it into a new, designer-level territory that will have people asking all about it at your next dinner party.

Outdoor rugs can lean a bit bland, but not in this sale section. The geometric motif is fresh, making it a great companion for your next alfresco hang.

Inspired by desert landscapes, this pop of color will play well in any room of your home. Cover part of the mountainous scene for a more abstract look or use it to command the room with a full-on view of this work of art.

Twice a year in Round Top, Texas, just an hour outside of Austin, the design world descends on one of the biggest antiques fairs in the country, stretched along 17 miles of highway. To those who attend, it’s a boon for weathered wood tables and seriously good mid-century and pristine ’70s-era furniture. In other words, for a newbie like me, shopping the Round Top Antiques Fair can be overwhelming.

Thankfully, for my first-ever trip, I was lucky enough to accompany Sheila Youngblood, the owner of the nearby Rancho Pillow, who’s been going to the fair since high school, when her grandmother started bringing her there. At her property, she presides over Feasts in the Field, an epic outdoor dinner party. Here, Youngblood, who graciously hosted me and Domino cover stars Jonathon Burford and Jesse Rudolph for a few days in March, shares all her secrets for shopping Round Top, along with her little black book of can’t-miss vendors.

Where do you recommend first-timers start?

The most important thing you can do before you go, especially for the first time, is prepare. Scan Instagram or Pinterest, or create your own mood board and find things that you like. Look at the pages of designers whom you admire and see if they talk about Round Top or vintage.

Then, once you’re there, move swiftly and make laps, taking photos along the way. [Once you’ve finished browsing their area], show your pics to the respective dealers so you only have one interaction where you’re telling them what you’re interested in. Ask for pricing from there. It’s nice to be respectful of their time and yours. You can make the decisions to buy or not buy based on what you find out in those conversations.

Youngblood has filled Rancho Pillow with vintage finds from around the world.

What do you always bring with you on a Round Top shopping day?

It’s the thrill of the hunt out there, and I really lose sight of time and all sensibilities. So as long as I have my phone and a backup battery, I can navigate the show pretty well. You don’t need to pack water or food—there’s always a snack you can pick up along the way.

Can you negotiate price, and what’s your advice for doing so?

The show is changing, and it feels a little bit more like a retail show than a flea market, which is how it began. But some dealers are priced to sell and ready to move things out the door so that they can bring in more containers, even during that show. Others are pretty strict on their pricing and less willing to negotiate. It certainly doesn’t hurt to ask, but I wouldn’t hound them—either buy it or don’t. Don’t try to rewrite the rules of the game. That only frustrates us as buyers and them as dealers.

How do you get, say, a giant dining room table home?

There are plenty of shippers there that go all over the U.S. and beyond. And once you start purchasing, you never know how much space you’re going to take up in a truck. So I would finish shopping and then look at everything that you have—and then call the shipper. Just keep in mind that the shipper has to pack everything up by the end of the show. So if you come near the end, you’ve got to be really swift in setting that up.

How many days should someone spend at Round Top?

If you can do it, come twice: two or three days at the beginning of the show, like opening weekend or just before because some fields you can get into a little bit early before it’s technically open. Then come back for Marburger, which is near the end of the fair, and it’s where shoppers wait behind tape before it opens at 9 a.m. to get into the tents. It’s like the running of the bulls.
